Beyond the City, Into the Desert
A few hours southwest of Cairo lies a completely different Egypt. The traffic gives way to open desert, palm groves and isolated hills. Beyond Bahariya Oasis, the landscape changes again: black volcanic stones scattered across golden sand, glistening quartz crystals and extraordinary white limestone formations shaped by thousands of years of wind.
This two-day adventure takes you deep into Egypt's Western Desert, travelling in a small group with experienced local desert guides.
You'll explore the Black Desert, discover Crystal Mountain, cross the remarkable landscapes of Agabat Valley and reach the White Desert in time for sunset.
But the most memorable part begins when the driving stops.
Your desert team prepares a campsite surrounded by the silence of the wilderness. Enjoy a freshly cooked dinner, share stories around the campfire and spend the night in a tent beneath the desert sky, far from city lights.
The following morning, wake for sunrise over the white limestone formations before enjoying breakfast and continuing your journey back through Bahariya Oasis.
Three freshly prepared meals are included: lunch and dinner on Day 1, and breakfast on Day 2. Your camping equipment and transportation are organised, allowing you to focus on the experience.

Day 1 — From Cairo to the White Desert
The Shape of the Day
07:00 AM — Gather in Cairo
Meet your guide and fellow travellers at the designated meeting point in Cairo. Board your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and begin the journey southwest towards Bahariya Oasis.
07:00 AM – 11:30 AM — The Road to Bahariya Oasis
Travel across Egypt's Western Desert, watching the city gradually disappear into the open landscapes. There will be an opportunity for a short comfort stop along the way.
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM — Arrival in Bahariya & Lunch
Arrive in Bahariya Oasis, known for its date palms, natural springs and traditional desert communities.
Enjoy your first included meal, a freshly prepared lunch at a local guesthouse or restaurant. After lunch, meet your local desert safari team and transfer into 4×4 vehicles.
12:30 PM – 01:30 PM — The Black Desert
Your off-road adventure begins among the distinctive hills of the Black Desert.
These golden-brown hills are covered with dark volcanic stones, creating one of the most unusual landscapes in Egypt. Stop for photographs and enjoy views across the surrounding desert.
01:30 PM – 02:15 PM — El Heiz Oasis
Continue south towards El Heiz, a small settlement surrounded by desert landscapes and natural springs.
Enjoy a short break before continuing deeper into the Western Desert.
02:15 PM – 03:00 PM — Crystal Mountain
Visit Crystal Mountain, a remarkable natural formation containing sparkling quartz crystals.
Learn about the geology of the surrounding desert and photograph the crystal-rich rock formations.
03:00 PM – 04:00 PM — Agabat Valley & Sand Dunes
Enter the spectacular landscapes of Agabat Valley, where pale rock formations rise dramatically from golden sand.
Stop at panoramic viewpoints and enjoy the scenery. Where conditions permit, there may be an opportunity for sandboarding.
04:00 PM – Sunset — Discover the White Desert
Continue towards the White Desert, famous for its extraordinary chalk formations.
Over time, wind erosion has shaped the limestone into unusual sculptures resembling mushrooms, birds and other imaginary forms.
Explore the formations and watch the desert change colour as the sun sets.
After Sunset — Desert Camp & Dinner
Your local desert team prepares the overnight campsite in a permitted camping area.
Settle into your tent before gathering for a freshly prepared dinner. A typical desert meal may include grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, salad and Egyptian bread, accompanied by tea.
Evening — Stargazing & Overnight Camping
As darkness falls, gather around the campfire and enjoy the extraordinary quiet of the desert.
Away from Cairo's city lights, the night sky can offer remarkable views of the stars when conditions are clear.
Spend the night in your tent, with camping mattresses and bedding provided.
Overnight: Tent camping in the White Desert area.

Day 2 — Desert Sunrise & Return to Cairo

06:00 AM – 07:00 AM — Sunrise in the White Desert
Wake early and step outside your tent to experience sunrise over the desert.
The first light brings changing shades of gold and pink to the surrounding chalk formations. This is a wonderful time for photography and a quiet walk near the campsite.
07:00 AM – 08:00 AM — Breakfast at Camp
Enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast in the desert, typically including Egyptian bread, eggs, cheese, jam, tea or coffee.
After breakfast, the camping team packs the equipment and prepares the vehicles for the return journey.
08:00 AM – 09:30 AM — White Desert Rock Formations
Continue exploring the White Desert, stopping at distinctive formations such as Mushroom Rock and Chicken Rock, where the wind has created some of the park's most recognisable natural sculptures.
Your desert guide will explain the natural processes responsible for these formations.
09:30 AM – 11:00 AM — Return to Bahariya Oasis
Travel back towards Bahariya, passing through the desert landscapes visited the previous day.
Depending on the route and conditions, there may be a short stop at a natural spring or scenic viewpoint.
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM — Bahariya Oasis & Departure Preparations
Return to Bahariya Oasis, where you can freshen up before changing back to the air-conditioned vehicle for the journey to Cairo.
12:00 PM – 04:30 PM — Return to Cairo
Travel back to Cairo, with a comfort stop along the way.
Arrival is expected in the late afternoon, depending on road conditions and traffic.
Returning to Cairo
Two days in the Western Desert offer something that a conventional sightseeing tour cannot: the experience of leaving the city behind and spending a night surrounded by one of Egypt's most extraordinary natural environments.
